President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially mediated the long-standing political feud between Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State and his former political godfather, Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Sources close to the presidency reveal that one of the key terms of the peace deal is that Governor Fubara will complete only one term in office.
⚖️ Key Terms of the Peace Accord:
- One-Term Limit: Fubara agrees to serve a single term as part of the truce
- State of Emergency Lifted: Tinubu ends the emergency rule declared on March 18, reinstating Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, to full executive functions
- Impeachment Halted: Pro-Wike lawmakers in the Rivers State Assembly will withdraw any move to impeach the governor
- Cut-Off From Allies: Fubara will distance himself from loyalists such as Senator Lee Maeba and Hon. Austin Opara, alleged to have escalated the rift with Wike
🗣️ Fubara Speaks:
Despite describing the terms as “painful,” Governor Fubara called the resolution a divine intervention and pledged to work toward long-term peace in Rivers State. He urged his supporters to do the same.
“Peace is what Rivers State needs now more than ever. The terms may be tough, but the future of our people matters most.”
⚠️ A Crisis Narrowly Averted:
The Tinubu-led intervention became necessary after the power tussle between Fubara and Wike plunged the state into near anarchy, forcing the federal government to declare a state of emergency earlier this year. Retired Naval Chief Ibok-Ette Ibas was temporarily appointed to stabilize the situation.
