VP Shettima Heads to Ethiopia on Strategic Visit to Boost Nigeria’s Bilateral Ties

Nigeria’s Vice-President, Kashim Shettima, has embarked on an official diplomatic visit to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, as part of ongoing efforts to deepen Nigeria’s relationship with the East African powerhouse.

The visit comes at the formal invitation of Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali and marks a new chapter in strategic collaboration between both nations.

🌱 Green Legacy & Climate Leadership

While in Ethiopia, Vice-President Shettima will participate in the official launch of Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Programme — a bold environmental initiative designed to combat deforestation and promote climate resilience.

According to a statement by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media & Communications (Office of the Vice President), the Green Legacy Programme is targeting the planting of 20 billion tree seedlings over a four-year period — a move that positions Ethiopia as a leader in climate action on the continent.

🏭 Economic Diplomacy in Action

Beyond the environmental agenda, Shettima’s itinerary includes a strategic tour of Ethiopia’s key industrial and agricultural sites, aimed at strengthening economic ties and exploring shared interests in agribusiness, manufacturing, and food security.

Among the sites scheduled for inspection are:

  • Adama Industrial Zone
  • Mojo Poultry Farm
  • Shera Dibandiba Mojo Family Integrated Farm
  • Lume Avocado Nursery Site
  • Bishoftu Pea Youth Farm

These visits are expected to spark new partnerships in economic diversification — a top priority for Nigeria’s development blueprint.

🤝 A Dinner of Diplomacy

Crowning the state visit, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed will host the Nigerian delegation to a State Dinner at the National Palace in Addis Ababa — a gesture symbolizing the long-standing friendship and mutual respect between both nations.

Nigeria and Ethiopia have maintained strong diplomatic relations for decades, collaborating on peacekeeping missions, regional stability, and economic development within the African continent.

As Africa continues to rise, partnerships like these are more than political — they are essential pillars of progress, sustainability, and unity across the continent.
