WAFCON 2025: Ghana Misses Crucial Win After 1-1 Draw Against Mali

The Black Queens of Ghana are still in search of their first win at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), following a tough 1-1 draw against Mali in their Group C clash on July 11, 2025.

Ghana started strong, dominating the first half with promising attacks and eventually finding the back of the net through defender Kusi. Despite creating several opportunities, they couldn’t extend their lead before halftime.

Mali struggled to gain momentum in the opening 45 minutes but returned after the break with renewed energy. Their persistence paid off when Aissata Traore scored the equalizer, shifting the game’s momentum. From that moment on, Mali controlled most of the second half, pushing Ghana onto the defensive.

With this result, Ghana now has just one point from two matches, placing their hopes of qualification in serious doubt. The Black Queens must defeat Tanzania in their final group game to stand any chance of advancing—possibly as one of the best third-place teams.

Meanwhile, Mali remains in a strong position with 4 points, and their final group match against South Africa could determine the top of the group.

Ghana’s coaching staff and fans will be disappointed with the result, especially after failing to capitalize on their early lead. Mali, on the other hand, will be pleased with the comeback and momentum heading into their last group fixture.

The road to the knockout stage remains uncertain for Ghana—but hope still lingers.
